The Annenberg Project

Rancho Palos Verdes, California

The proposed Annenberg Project at Lower Point Vicente, in Rancho Palos Verdes, is designed to be a world-class education and family destination, celebrating the natural environment and our relationships with animals and other living things. Located on a magnificent 16.5 acre site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this project will compliment the existing Pointe Vicente Interpretive Center located on the edge of the bluff.

Two new buildings, the Annenberg Center and the Outpost, will provide interactive educational exhibits, volunteer and community service opportunities, animal behavior training, medical and adoption services, and state-of-the-art communications and information-sharing capabilities.

The buildings have been designed to facilitate the organization's wide variety of education-oriented programs while complimenting the site's unique context. Visually anchored to the site with cast-in-place concrete frames on the east side, the architecture has a strong horizontal thrust, with deep cantilevered roof extensions as it visually soars towards the ocean and Catalina Island beyond. The Annenberg Center is a two-story, three-level structure which gently steps in unison with the topography. Viewed from Palos Verdes Drive above, with its green roof, the building is integrated into the natural landscape. Viewed from below, the building form has been sculpted with three gentle arcs alluding to the shape of the shoreline below.
