Los Altos Hills, California
The SANA Residence is sited on a steep northwest facing hillside parcel, accessed by a “panhandle” driveway from the northeast, in Silicon Valley’s semi-rural community of Los Altos Hills.
In response to the town’s strict limits on “maximum development area,” the design solution is a compact, linear three-level bar that parallels the contours of the land. All major spaces are oriented to the downhill views, with large areas of glazing on the uphill side of the home designed to maximize natural lighting from the south. A double height, wood-clad family / great room is the central space in the home, surrounded by white cement plaster clad volumes on the ends of the long bar design. Rectangular cement plaster wall, floor and roof extensions visually connect interior spaces to the exterior, and frame views of the beautiful landscape and the valley beyond.
