Intrigued and excited when our client approached us with a creatively written brief to transform a 1950s ranch home, we accepted this commission for a young family on a modest budget. Walls were removed and a new, higher ceiling placed, supported by steel columns that soar far out and over the backyard to connect the dining and living spaces to the outdoors and northwest facing views. A diagonal rock "pathway," finished in small stones symbolic of the Calçada of the owner's native Brazil, separates the entry/living room from the kitchen/dining room and shoots into the landscape. Weekends are often spent outdoors, under the protection of this giant roof overhang, as the planes of shadows and light from the circular opening continuously change.
